I purchased the Garmin lifetime map updates for my Garmin 765 and found out after purchasing that I can only update 4 times a year. What is the best time to use these updates. I know that June is one of the major updates each year. Have I wasted my money?

Thanks,
Dennis

Garmin now updates the maps 4 times per year or every quarter. They should send you an email at the address they have on file for you when the updates are posted or when you plug in your unit to your computer and use the web updater, it will indicate there are new maps available. I don't beleive you wasted your money if you want to have the most current mapping.

4 times a year is plenty, and the email notification of updates is great.

Here in Coffs it has taken more than 2 years to add roadworks that have been done.

Nothing is perfect and you may have to wait.

I have a 765 which I bought in Jul/Aug 09 and so received the 2010 map.
Guess what the map is so out of date in Brisbane it does not have the new road to the gateway from Nudgee so it keeps on telling you to do a u turn and shows that you are in the middle of a field.
On my Garmin Etrex with Shonky and the free GPS maps it is also clearly indicated.
Why is it missing on 2010, the road has been under construction for about 2 years, surely enough time for someone to add it in even if it says "proposed".
This is not the only error, there are many, IE Caboolture, Northlakes, Darra to name a few.
I believe that if they are so far out of date Garmin should give us a free update on the "free update" I certainly wont be spending cash on a new map when I can buy a Tomtom and get the free map update option as long as I have the unit, yes, for free, no charges.
How do I know this? I have also got 2 tomtoms, one with this option and it cost US$129.

I just got the Nuvi 765 and put 2010 maps on and it now routes me wrong at ferry bridge where A1 joins to M62.
With the 2009 map on it was fine.

I have a Garmin 670 and just paid for the life time of free map updates. Before I paid for that I used my Garmin all over North America it got me to every address I wanted with out any trouble even though the maps are a couple of years out of date. Because you could not add poi's when I first brought it I thought I would buy a Tom Tom and then I could add everything I wanted. Me and the wife went away for the weekend so I thought I would try out my new tomtom When I went to use it it would not find any of the post codes, it showed the hotel was on another corner of the road and when we went for a drive I pressed the button to take me back to the hotel what a joke that was it took me off the main road around some very narrow tight bends only to bring me back on to the same main road about a mile ahead from where I turned off. I drive a truck and you can not go off route like that so I went on line and looked to see how much it was for the up dates and I paid for the life time updates and now I can add all my poi's.

I have also got Autoroute 2010 and the Garmin poi are the same for my Autoroute.

I have had my Garmin 670 for 3 years and I am very happy with it. I will never buy a Tomtom again.

Dennis,
Map updating every three months is great - - isn't it? If you look at your other option you'll pay hundreds of $$$
So, if you start at June, next upgrade is Sept, then Dec, then March, then back to June. So, upgrade as soon as the upgrade is available. Your maps should never be more than 3 months old.

Does a new Garmin come with one free map update?

Can I wait 6 month to update the map? I see that the map that come with my unit still pretty new. It has a version 2010.10.

Actually, Garmin not only posts maps updates, but sometimes firmware updates. Instead of using the program webupdater (supplied by Garmin in its website), you must register your GPS, conect by USB port, login to "My Garmin" in Garmin website, and then go to My Dashboard. Your GPS will be recognized, and all updates available (not only maps) will be done online.
It does work good.

I checked the Garmin web site when my 780 came up with a message that my maps were out of date. Instead of Mapsource, they're now offeriing Numaps. the subscription thing is the same. I also have a 660 with Mapsource that I will not be updating. Instead I think I'll be getting a new 1690 when this one no longer is good enough. It's more important to me to have the traffic updated than the maps at this point. FM traffic is weak, MSN traffic goes away in 2012, and the new Garmin traffic will be the way to go.
All that being said, four times a year is a great improvement over the yearly updates we had. If you'd buy a paper map it wouldn't be updated that often, either. Go for the lifetime and enjoy it.

The maps are up to 2010.30, and the next one is due this month.
Checked yesterday and not available yet.

One advantage of using webupdater over mygarmin dashboard is that you can choose the updates you want and ignore the ones you don't.

For instance, if you deleted many of the unused voices, one of the updates you may be offered will include the missing voices. Using webupdater, you can ignore the files you know you don't need. I think dashboard will download all update files.

When I got my 1690, I copied all the files to a folder on my PC. Then I went in and deleted most of the voice files plus a lot of other stuff that didn't apply to my usage, such as:

Gupdate.gcd
unused:
--voices
--vehicles
--help files
--EULA
--keyboards

The 1690 as sold in the USA only has 2 Gb of storage. The European version has 4 Gb. When I was through deleting useless files, I had around 400 Mb free space.

Of course, delete files at your own risk, YMMV and all that stuff.
