I bought my Garmin 265w from a Future Shop two weeks ago, functions good
but i noticed today it lost satelite signal four times on a five kilometer stretch
of road recalculating each time with incorrect directions,it was a sunny day
with some cloud cover but not that bad, what do you all think should i take it
back for an exchange or wait, anybody know what future shops policy is on
exchange also would it be wise to pay the difference and buy the next model
above the Garmin 265w.Thank You.
I had an older model of Garmin once that did things like that. Never could fix it in spite of what I did. Best to return it for a new one before your exchange/return period ends which I believe with Future Shop is 30 days. In terms of upgrading to a better model, my personal rule of thumb is to purchase the best one you can afford. It is always less expensive than outgrowing or becoming dissatisfied with the one you bought and repurchasing the better one you wanted in the first place.
The acquisition of satellites probably depends a lot on the electrical conditions (the static type sounds you hear from an untuned radio) of the day. My experience has been that one day the GPS picks up a satellite before I leave my drive way, and others times when the weather conditions are identical, it takes ages. I don't think exhanging a unit will improve that, unless you spend more on a unit with a higher quality aerial.
Would agree with getting the best GPS you can afford, but if having problems getting satelites I would return it A.S.A.P. as is faulty with what you describe.
I too had this problem and it turned out to be the antenna. I took the unit to the garmin service centre and they replaced the antenna it was covered by warranty, If you just purchased it take it back and get a replacement, if not then the service centre is the best option, good luck.,
What I did was to exchange it, this one works great, as soon as I turn
it on it picks up satelite signal in 20 or 30 seconds almost every time
whether it is cloudy or sunny. The original one was shot.
