GPS: Garman Nuvi 250w

Being a new user to the web site and POI, I have had a frustrating learning curve.
First tried to manually copy downloaded files to the POI directory on my Garmin, only to discover that GPX files vanish after disconnecting from the computer.
After a call to Garmin support was told that I needed a POI converter, but couldn't find one to convert GPX to GPI files needed for the 250W.

Go here to download the POI Loader program, free download.
It converts all files into one file, a POI.GPI and loads that to your Garmin. Each time you update anything it will erase the old file and install the new file (overwrites).

Thanks for the reply.

I'm getting there. Have now got to the point where I see collections of files can be created as poi.gpi by the downloader, and then renamed and manually installed in the Garmin\poi so as to work with smaller groups of files rather than have everything in a single file.

I have listed all the POI files in their corresponding sub directories as per the wording on this site, under C:\Garmin\POI
i.e C:]Garmin\POI\Safety
etc etc
Then download the latest updates into those sub-directories on the computer.
The use POI Loader to upload to the Garmin GPS.
Leave the Garmin directory on your computer as you last left it, and when you do updates, you just overwrite the same file in the directory you need it in.
Then just use POI Loader again to upload it all agin to the Garmin GPS.
That way, you don't lose anything and save mass downloads.
The POI.gpi just gets overwritten each time you update.
I also rename the POI. gpi in the GPS before transfers and keep it in case I am not happy with the latest update I have done, then you can delete the latest and rename the saved file back to POI. gpi

Have you thought about saving the different categories of pois as seperate gpi files? I saw a post somewhere which suggested you could save categories of pois and rename them as eg. safety.gpi etc and manually copy the gpi files to the Garmin.

I haven't tried it yet, but I do have several school.gpi (one each state. at least 4 anyway) files for school zones in Aus. and they work fine. They give the alert text on the Garmin and a voice alert as well, and they do not interfere with poi.gpi in any way.

Which directories in you GPS are the various GPI files ?
The POI Loader sorts all .GPX, CSV files before loading them into ONE POI.gpi file to the GPS from the computer, and the GPS reads them as they were seen on your computer.
Think I may be missing something?

Post multiple gpi files

All my GPI files are in Garmin\POI. I have figured out that to create a POI file, I need to use the POI loader, but it appears you merely create a POI.GPI file of those you want eg. Safety, but before creating another POI.GPI rename this file on you Garmin to Safety.GPI, and then create another eg Schools. This will create a new POI.GPI which you would then rename accordingly.

Does that make sense?

I think you will find that everything in all the sub directories under Garmin\POI are sorted and loaded as the . GPI file to the Garmin GPS, but are read as they were in the computer before creating the POI.gpi
If you check your custom section in the Garmin I think you will find they are as per in the computer sub directories.
