I'm currently in the market for a GPS. I want something basic, ideally under $250. I'd like spoken street names and up to date maps but I don't think there's anything else I require.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

There's a couple of units that have spoken street name features. Two are:
* Garmin nuvi 350 Portable GPS
* TomTom ONE XL-S

I think the Garmin is the cheaper of the two. It depends on what other features you are looking for in the unit.

Stick with one of the brand names. I had a Navigon, it work very well, but support was the worst and map updates were ever worst. We now have 2 Garmins and love them, one is 3 years old and still works like a champ.

The latest Garmins also have Google built in to provide up to date information - very cool.

I'd go for a Garmin, they have good mapping and support.

Love Garmin. Don't buy a 760, its a shocker. Don't know if the 765 is better but of all the many units I've had the 760 is the worst ...

It might be a bit more expensive, but my GPS rarely lets me down. Don't think you can go wrong with the biggest namebrands, as said earlier.

Tomtom is ok if you are a rich female, living in Amsterdam, not traveling a lot...

The 765 has weak audio (really hard to hear) and a very short battery life. No way to find out about either unless you can lay hands on a unit in a store to compare them--which might be worth doing.

And the entire concept of "it can speak through your FM radio" is a no-brainer unless you are really out in the boonies, there's someone using pretty much every slot on the FM dial and unless you continually retune the Nuvi, something is talking "over" it very shortly, all the time.

Have had a Garmin 310 for a few years, it's utterly reliable and easy to use.
Just bought a Garmin 265W today (on special), looks great so far.
Did a fair bit of research before i got it, one of the main things for me was Bluetooth, made this decision pretty easy.
Very Happy
