I just got a TomTom 720 for Christmas and I went through all the motions of getting it going... I then put some pictures and music on to it but it seems to be taking a very, very long time to download them... When I remove the 720 from the cradle I get a big red X... I have tried to reboot it, turn it off and on... and I still only get this big red X... I can do nothing with it... WHAT IS GOING ON???

It is quite common tomtom bug.
Do: 1. backup restore or 2. copy all original SD files to your new formated SD card. Restart TomTom and see if it works. 3. Return it to the store for replacement if it does not work.
Cheers

mine is a tomtom xl, so it doesn't have a memory card. Can I back it up anyway? and this is the second day I've had it and it worked perfectly fine until I opened tomtom home.

I found this.

Question: Device shows a flashing cross when turned on.

Answer:

If your device only shows a cross after you turn it on, the TomTom application is not installed or cannot be found.

To solve this, follow the steps below.

Manually remove the TomTom application:
Reset your device.

Connect your device to your computer.

Turn on your device by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.

Do one of the following:
Windows: Click Start > My Computer and then double-click the Removable Disk for your TomTom device.
Macintosh: Double-click the desktop icon for your TomTom device.

Delete all files except the following:
Do not delete any of the folders!
Do not delete the files antitheftw.bmp, lowbatteryw.bmp and splashw.bmp (if present)!

Reinstall the TomTom application:
Start TomTom HOME

Select an option:
I previously updated my device on this computer
I never updated my device on this computer

Click Done and then click Device > Disconnect Device.
Your device should now start up again. If it hasn't started up after 10 seconds, press the On/off button.

I have worked on this problem for at least 6 hours and finally this remedy works.

Thanks for the post!

Hmm, would love to try this but windows can't delete half the files because they're 'data_xxx.chk' files and the tomtom doesn't seem to want them deleted.
