Garmin Nuvi range

Does anyone have any experience of the new Nuvi GPS units from Garmin? They are compact, feature rich and getting rave reviews in the USA and UK and I'd like to hear from anyone who may have some hands-on experience.

Fits in car beside door pillar hidden out of site
I looked it up on usa sites best contrast in its range
easy to read
friend saw it and also brought it
there is a $50 refund voucher if you purchase it in may-june
I paid 920 less 50 = $870 cash Very Happy

Great little unit. Battery life min 4 hrs .. enough to walk and play. Purchased this in MEL set it up in my car and in La Trobe St (city) had sat fix in few minutes (tho about 200 metres off untill I got moving). Arround suburbs got me where I wanted to go, no probs, but as this is unfamiliar city can't rate performance.

Trip to Falls Creek had "shortest time" direct me via Wangaratta .. tho I knew it was quicker to take the turnoff at Glenrowan .. Changed to shortest route" and Nuvi and I were in agreement... suspect that might not have been so good getting out of Mel. Also wanted me to drive via Bright .. not my preferred option.

Very easy to use. Clear and bright, small and port.

And now I know why I have so many speeding fines at 71 kms, when my speedo reads 69 !

Did a 2,000k trip to test NuVi. Extremely happy with the unit, but the one 'via' point only feature is a PIA. On longer trips I think you need a minimun of 6 'via' points to 'force' the unit on your desired route. Also the volume needs to be louder for noisy 4WDs (especially on gravel roads) and the volume needs to be louder when the phone is bluetoothed. In marginal phone coverege areas it is difficult to hear the unit on the dash.

Also for the price of this top end unit it should be supplied with the 240v AC charger (as they do in the USA) as you have to pay another $50 for it as an accessory.

Other than these gripes the unit is excellent.

Have owned 1 for 4 days
its seems really great
however
I would like to be able to add to lists build in like the Hotels or Petrol stations without just adding POI's or favorites, I would like them within the data base.
any ideas if this can be done

I found the volume a bit low aswel so I brought a amp module from Jaycar I think it was 12 watt output for $17.00 easy to hook up inline with the external speaker

Bought mine two weeks ago $949 AUD at JB HiFi. Garmin tell me that v7 will come FOC if I register.
No probs with the unit but I wish you could file your POIs and faves in folders - business, friends etc. Also would like more than one via point but that can be overcome by planning a trip in stages I guess. Mostly I do city navigation to job sites and for this it is perfect.
Country trips - I know the basic route so if we don't agree it just has to recalculate!
Also a few quirky directions but that's related to Sensis data not Garmin. At least if you miss the turn off it doesn't want to force a Uturn like Tom Tom.
Voices could be louder - but I cope even with kids in the back and the radio on. Still am interested in the JayCar module for the speaker - how do we do that?
Everything else is great.

Purchased one of these a couple of days back, up graded the software to version 2.9

The one main problem I have with it so far is that I cannot get it to ignore the Moggill Ferry, yes I have the 'Avoid Ferries' opyion selected. Any trip south of my residence and it goes the ferry, ignores Mt Crosby and Kenmore routes.

I have also tried using the shortest and fasted but no difference.

Is there an Australian Garmin tech support? or do I have to contact the states?

Nuvi 350

The Nuvi 350 is great. Took it to Cape Cod and Maine from Maryland the other week. Punched in the address on the Cape and it took us door-to-door... and when the wife wanted pizza from "Mystic (CT) Pizza" (from the movie), she typed in "Mystic Pizza" and the machine walked us through right up to the front door. It was great finding our hotel in Falmouth and Portland as well. Best feature was this: there was an 8 mile backup entering New Haven, CT on I-95 last Friday. I pressed 'detour' and the Garmine took us 8.5 miles up the road and put us back onto 95 just after the road construction. Impressive.

Don't waste your money on the external antena. Not worth the 30 bucks to get 3 more feet of accuracy. Embarassed

One really annoying 'feature' I encountered was not knowing which way to turn when exiting shopping centre carparks - Nuvi might say 'proceed 1.6 km North on xxxx street' but as I drove out of the car park (at night or in city canyon) how the hell could I tell which way was North?

But I love my Nuvi
