There are apps that rely on having an internet connection and others that have the maps stored for offline access the same as in a navigator, BUT it seems to me that the maps on the free apps are better than in my navigator being updated all the time by the users. It is still early days but the days of a dedicated GPS are numbers I think.
With the multitude of almost free and free apps for an android and the ability to download them so they are available offline make a dedicated GPS a wast of $$ now, though you need a largish phone for it to work well.
I have a 5" and once my Garmin breaks or becomes outdated I wont be buying another.
