I guess, for avoidance of doubt: @gdarby, when you want to update your data, download the updated file(s) and overwrite over the top of the existing ones.

i.e. download (where relevant/exists):
- Garmn POI BMP (the icon for the map)
- Garmin MP3 (or WAV if you have a 2xx model)
- one of the following, in the following order of availability:
Garmin GPX > Garmin POI > Garmin POI GPX > Garmin POI CSV

Looks like the mp3 capability is gone with most of the latest nuvi GPSs.
WAV files only for the following:
2xx (except 295W)
465
500
550
1xxx
37xx

car... can you elaborate on the reasons for the ordered choice above? (gpx>poi>poi gpx>poi csv)

Post Newbie Basic Questions From A Newbie
Reply with quote

Greetings, since I have been a member here for about two hours - I guess this Newbie section is a good spot for me. Every time I think I have it figured out I quickly realize that I don't!

I have a little confusion as I keep reading that there is only one POI file and any change creates a "replacement file". Is this also in reference to the original POI's that were provided with the GPS?

And if not, does the GPS display/use both the POI's that I add along with the originals simultaneously?

If the originals are stored differently, where are they found?

I am assuming when you do a map update (from Garmin) that it updates their original POI's?

If so, does that mean that a map update will wipe out anything (POI's) I have added?

Sorry about these elementary questions but I am trying to get a better understanding before I dive in and start uploading to the GPS.

Thank you for your efforts. Wink

No. The custom POIs are stored in a different location. You cannot delete the original POIs that come with the map.

The custom POIs are found under GoTo/Extras/Custom POIs. I believe the answer to your question is no, they are not used simultaneously. When you search the built in POIs, you do it from the icon. When you search the custom POIs, you do it from Go To/Extras/custom Pois.

I don't know.

Yes.

No, since they are stored in a different location. You can even store customs POIs on a separate memory card.

HTH.

Thanks speedlever,

Thanks for living up to your screen name and providing me with a speedy reply. Cool

It looks as the details are pretty much as I assumed, but assuming has gotten me into big trouble before.

I truly appreciate the precise and clear answers, I think I am brave enough now (or dangerous enough) Rolling Eyes to plug in the GPS to the computer.

Sincerely

Post Using POILoader

Quote:
You HAVE to use POI Loader to get the updates into your GPS. ALL your poi files are grouped/coded into 1 (one) POI.GPI fole and then loaded to your GPS.

To further elaborate, you can use POILoader to create the POI.gpi file on either your GPS or your computer. If created on your computer, you have to copy the gpi file to the POI folder on your GPS.

POILoader combines bmp, mp3/wav, and csv/gpx files into one gpi file that the GPS recognizes as custom POIs.

POIoader will work through one level of subdirectories. If you have multiple sources of POI files and wish to group them by source, you will need to run POILoader as many times as you have sources. You must rename the output file (POI.gpi) before running the next instance of POILoader.

Understand that POILoader only outputs a single file named POI.gpi. You must rename it if you need to run POILoader more than once to generate all your POIs. You do not need to run POILoader but once if all your POIs are in subfolders under one parent folder. It all depends on how you structure your files.

I am not aware of any limit to the number of gpi files the GPS can make use of. OTOH, I am not aware of any advantage in having more than one gpi file for your custom POIs.

For instance if you get POIs from GPSDataTeam and also from Garmin, you could have a folder named GPSDataTeam and then subfolders beneath that which may contain safety cameras, mobile speed traps, school speed zones, Dairy Queens, IHOP, etc.
Example:

GPSDataTeam (parent folder)

-safety cameras (subfolder)
--filename.bmp
--filename.mp3 or wav
--filename.csv or gpx

-mobile speed traps (subfolder)
--filename.bmp
--filename.mp3 or wav
--filename.csv or gpx

-school speed zones (subfolder)
--filename.bmp
--filename.mp3 or wav
--filename.csv or gpx

-Dairy Queen (subfolder)
--filename.bmp
--filename.mp3 or wav
--filename.csv or gpx

-IHOP (subfolder)
--filename.bmp
--filename.mp3 or wav
--filename.csv or gpx

Then create another parent folder named GarminPOI with subfolders containing whatever files you get there (as per the example above.)

Run POILoader on the first folder (GPSDataTeam) and direct the output either to the GPS or to a known place on your computer. When POILoader is finished and you have the POI.gpi file, rename it to GPSDataTeam.gpi. Only the filename extension is important that it stay as gpi.

Run POILoader a 2nd time and direct it to your GarminPOI parent folder as the source. You'll end up with another POI.gpi file when POILoader is finshed. Rename it GarminPOI.gpi. You should now have two gpi files: one named GPSDataTeam.gpi and the other named GarminPOI.gpi.

If you directed the output of POILoader to your computer, all you have to do now is copy and paste the two gpi files (which you earlier renamed) to the POI folder on your GPS or the POI folder of your data card on the GPS. If you directed the output to your GPS, you should have two gpi files in your POI folder named GPSDataTeam and GarminPOI.

Now when you select GoTo/Extras/Custom POIs, you'll find POIs under categories with the same names as the subfolders under each of your sources.

Post POI Audio Volume Level

Greetings speedlever,

Thank you for the additional information, I have gained a pretty good understanding of the "rules" to be successful at achieving the desired results.

After spending a few days reading the various messages on this site, I finally tried a small POI file of part of the Red Light Camera warnings. Because of the pointers about file names and folders everything worked flawlessly. I am starting to like my ol' GPS more than ever. This adds a great little feature, without a doubt.

The one thing I would like to improve is the volume of the Red Light Camera Alert audio. It has a lower volume level than all the other audio files. If anything I would really like it a little louder than the other audio. I have read some of the other postings that mentioned the same thing and details about altering the audio file to increase the volume level.

Since I am basically lazy, I am wondering if there are any other "red light audio" files that can be download that already have a higher volume level? I poked around a little bit but didn't find anything yet.

Any other suggestions for possible solutions would be appreciated.

Thanks ya'll

I had to copy both sox.exe and cygwin1.dll into C:/garmin folder, now everything works fine and the poiloader doesn't complain anymore,

Post Keep POI's on a data bank or flashdrive
Reply with quote

You will end up deleteing your POI's if you leave them on your computer.

So back up those POI's and save them to a flash drive or data bank.

Then you can reload the specific POI's you want by dragging and dropping them onto your computer.

Be sure and use the POI loader to move them to your Garmin.

I am a newbie to this web site and encourage those new to the site to become familiar with the Download instructions etc found under the various usergroup topics. It took me awhile to get the hang of downloading POI files and installing them on my Nuvi 1490T but reading widely I find the website very good and the answers are there to questions. So newbies keep at it.

Hi all,

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1390. I finally got it to work when I downloaded sox.exe from the link mentioned in this thread:
https://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/2500.html#5535

I had to:
* use the directory structure mentioned above
* use wav files
* use GPX files downloaded which were labelled "Garmin POI GPX"
* when running POI Loader I did "Manual" and chose 100m.

It alerts when I am 100m away from the POI.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tim
