Yes, I've never seen an usable in-dash satnav unit that comes with a car.

Hopefully anyone thinking of buying a GPS Sat Nav will heed this warning. Manufacturers recommend the maps and points of interest need updating about once a year to reflect new roads, POIs and the like. Guess what, they charge you up to $130 to download the updates. Almost the price I paid for the unit. The solution? Buy yourself a brand new Sat Nav from someone else who offer an equally good system but, unlike Garmin or Tomtom, do not rip their customers off. Pricing policies like this lose large numbers of customers and can seriously damage a companies reputation.

I am in the UK and the biggest ripoff that has always annoyed me has been that most Satnav's are only sold with UK and Ireland maps as standard. I notice that in most European countries they come with Europe (UK & Ireland included) as standard. The solution is to buy it outside of the UK so UK users are getting short changed.
4 years ago I bought a Medion Satnav from Aldi in Belgium
It cost me 100 Euros, covered Eastern and Western Europe and even included speed camera alerts
I've used it for all of 4 years and its been great.
The only annoyance has been map update reminders and the high cost of updates. I've ignored them and only had two problems with route changes in all that time and all camera warnings have been spot on.
I now have a Garmin which cost me £115 but has lifetime map updates for all of Europe but no camera alerts. I'm blowed if I'm going to pay £25 a year for a speed camera subscription. A charge I find outrageously expensive to add to what I already paid.

if it was £10 for a map update then I'd update at least every year (and every time I went on a big trip to a place i've never been before). Instead, I gawp at the cost of £70 and think to myself that I will never buy another Garmin product again.
Total rip-off.

I wonder how many casual purchasers of sat-nav's would buy them if the manufacturer's were made to advertise the cost of updates on the box.

Garmin units have been selling with free lifetime map updates for the past 2 to 3 years, and the GPS units haven't risen in price. Sounds like you got the wrong model or it is an older GPS.

The GPS_Data _Team site puts all the POI's and speed cam data on site for nearly all GPS units. The fee is for lifetime subscription and not yearly.
Bet you don't work for nothing . Smile
