Post Combining POIs in to Groups - RNS510NAV
Reply with quote

Hello,

First post, so please be gentle Smile

I've just had a RNS510NAV installed in my car and would like to add some POIs, specifically all my work addresses and National Trust propertiess.

There is a POI installed with the device that includes shopping/bangking/safety POIs, etc., but I would like to add mine.

I can't seem to get how these different groups are managed, because when I produce a POI the device doesn't recognise it. I've overwritten the existing one but kept a copy, so when I've re-installed it everything is back to normal.

I'm using this site to convert the files to *.csv and then manually combining them before I convert it to *.db3. But do I actually need to?

Thanks

Hi
How do you "produce a POI"? Our POI Zone combines all selected files to groups. Do you save POI as DB3 or convert with our DB3 tools?

I 'produce' a POI using your POI Edit. I load the existing file and then added some new records, but I guess that's probably wrong (coz it didn't work!). I then saved it as a *.db3 file.

I think I just need a simple guide on how to do this properly - everything I've read seems to be a bit complicated for me Sad

Really, all I want to do is add National Trust Properties and all my work locations as separate Groups in the PersonalPOI.db3 file - but learn how to do it so I don't need to keep asking silly questions!

Thanks

Hi
I'll try to help. Try to create a single location DB3 POI file, e.g. your home or work place, and load it to your device. Does it work?

Thanks for your help.

Do you mean use POI Edit to write a new one with a single entry and install it on to my 510 - overwriting the PersonalPOI with this one? Should I therefore save the single entry POI as a *.db3? What filename should I give it?

Sorry if these are really basic questions!

Thanks

Hi
Yes, backup your system, download any DB3 file from our POI Zone (e.g. https://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/united_kingdom/recreation/National_Trust-UK.html ), or create a test file with the same name as your current file and save it to your system. Is there any error message?

I'll write a new one and try that, but I guess I need to call it something other than 'PersonalPOI'?

Thanks

OK, tried that and failed. For some reason or another, whenever I produce a POI the RNS510 recognises and imports, the POI menu items are 'greyed' out - and I have no idea why.

This means I have no access to the POI menu tree that includes PersonalPOI menu item and all the other groups that were there.

I must be doing something wrong or fundamentally misunderstanding something (I was a TomTom user), as the POI's provided by the installer work perfectly from the PersonalPOI menu - but mine don't. I even gave it the same name!

I'm really struggling with this and beginning to despair.

Help?

Thanks

Hi Nightowl433,
I hope that our POI Editor works. We had no issues like this reported before. I will ask Andrew to revisit that script and try to find someone with VW to test the output file.

Hmm, I don't know what's going on here, but I tried to prodce a POI with a single entry and it won't save as a db3 file. I've named it petes_house.db3 but that doesn't work. I can save the *.csv(Microsoft) file, though.

Does it make a difference that I'm running an iMac? I've tried Safari, Firefox and Chrome browsers, but with the same results - or a blank screen Sad

It should work on iMac. Do you use any firewall/Zone/Norton/Download manager that blocks our downloads?

Nope, nothing like that.

I might have an old Windows PC laptop somewhere. I'll have a go with that...

OK, troed that and failed again. This isn't looking good, but it must be something I'm doing wrong if you've not had this issue before!

Did you have any luck with the file I sent you?

Let me know if I've got the process correct...

1. Go to https://www.gps-data-team.com/convert/poiedit.php and enter data for each record line, comprising at least eastings and northings.
2. Name my file in the File Name field and select db3 in the file type.
3. Click save

I understand the file will then download to my default 'save to...' on my iMac - only it doesn't. The webpage goes blank - with all browsers on my iMac and my old Windoze PC.

I can, however, save the file as a *.csv. If I do this and then try to convert it to a db3 file, the screen goes blank - again.

Getting desperate, now...

I'm going to try again, but with the National Trust csv file I downloaded from somewhere else, and I'll let you know how I get on...

OK, so is there a minimum number of lines in a db3 file?

I've just successfully imported the National Trust *.csv file and saved it as a db3 file, although I named it 'The_National_Trust' and selected db3 file, it saved it as PersonalPOI.db3

Is this to be expected?

It is at this stage I would copy the db3 file to the PersonalPOI folder on the root of my SD Card, insert it in to the slot of my RNS510 and then import the PersonalPOI file to overwrite the existing one. After doing this, the menu options to use PersonalPOI to enable them in the Map is greyed out and I can't navigate to the POI for the same reason. Every single POI is missing, including the built-in ones.

When I re-import the original data file, everything is back to normal - except, of course, I don't have the National Trust POIs available.

OK, so here come the results...

Everything works perfectly with the POIs provided by the installer, until...
I edit the provided file by adding a new record - The POIs are imported, overwriting the original, but I can't select Map Details from the Map menu or navigate to a POI.
I write a new POI, name it something other than PersonalPOI.db3 and import it - As above
I d/l one of your POIs, name it something other than PersonalPOI.db3 and import it - As above
    I re-import the original file (which isn't named PersonalPOI.db3) - Everything's back to normal

Now I'm definitely confused!
