Any system that needs an online connection to navigate will always be vulnerable to drop outs or connectivity issues.
The advantages are that the map data and routing will be coming from a server and therefore hopefully less out of date.

Do you incur data charges on the Android ? If so, you had better check what you will be charged for that data, as you could get a surprising bill each month.
Can't see a mobile being any where as accurate or quick as a dedicated GPS either, seeing as how mobiles drop out unless within direct line of site with a tower.

I've been using (or in case of a mobile trying to use) both - a GPS and a mobile (Android) for geocaching and there's really nothing to compare: looking for caches with a mobile is just terrible - I used to spend hours looking for a particular coordinates and when I finally got my Navman GPS I couldn't believe that pin-pointing the actual location can be so easy.

So: if you're just interested in a broad idea of where you are, I guess you could do with a mobile positioning. But if you really need to be in a specific place (+/- 1ft), you need a GPS.

As I understand it no stand alone GPS is accurate to 1 ft. If you want to get that sort of accuracy you need differential GPS ie the GPS data is corrected by reference to a known base station. As I understand it your normal Satnav systems do NOT use differential GPS.

I bought a prepaid Androide mobile phone from Aldi for $60 and sometimes use it with Android Navigator. However I can also use other, no data connection, GPS software for Android. Ther are also other Android Apps around that can do equivalent to the dedicated satnav.

With dedicated GPS devices they are basically only Satnav systems and can do little else where as Android Navigator is only one App on a Android phone.

Because Android Navigator is integrated with other Google Apps like Street view and Latitude you can see a steet view of every part of your journey and see where friends and colleagues are, as they move. That type of functionality is not available in a dedicated Satnav system.

I like the Android navigation system. It has maps for the UK and now USA with a Bing and Google interface for finding locations. Usually something you can plan when you have data or WiFi connectivity. Then the app just uses in the built in GPS of the phone (Galaxy S2) so is not reliant on the data connectivity. Particularly useful when in the country side! Seems like a great compromise.

I suggest you to use IPAD to GPS, not use Android Navigator because their batteries are low......

I have both a Garmin GPS and Motorola Droid X2 with Google maps on it. I find both to be rather accurate, but the Garmin is more up to date with live traffic - Google maps however shows more detail of the destination/address and what is around this area I am heading to.

l have a samsung galaxy 3 and note 10.1 and Garmin 2455lm and the gps software for the phones are great as whereis , navfree, navigation they all work well but the phone gets hot running them, they are ok for a quick lookup to find something, but for a full time job Garmin dose it best job and l can edit the poi and gpx files to what l want and l fine it easy to do on a Garmin....... Google navigator is a good basic (very-very basic) navigator for an occasional user. It requires constant data connection, indeed. In your home country Internet is probably free on you plan. When abroad - this issue is a show stopper. The main advantage of this navigator is proper UK English pronunciation and the way the spoken instructions are phrased.

I use Copilot Live Premium on Android. There is no way I would carry a dedicated GPS box with me when travelling. GPS in rented cars is also useless, so there is no alternative to a good GPS on a phone.

Well, we are talking about Smart Phones, which implies that the screen is usable for consuming visual context, which means OLED and 5.5in...

If you don't care about the GPRS or WIFI fee, I think Google map is better than GPS. Because we don't need to update the map.

I prefer the full app. Download the App and maps and then don't need constant data connection to run it.
