What do you use to detect open wifi. How do you tell a permanent wireless location, to just some random one open for a day. I am interested in doing a survey of some Sydney locations, I have an iphone, anyone have any ideas about utilities to use?

Usually just the "Site Monitor" feature built into most WiFi-Card software.

I was driving around today for about 20 min with my netbook stopping every 500 meters or so and refreshing the wifi networks within range on XP installation. Was amazed at how many wifi setups there are every stop had at least 2 and upto 8 listed. only found 1 without security

I use WiFiTrak on my iPhone. It works very well. I just returned from a trip to Europe and used it extensively to find Open WiFi connections.

I keep the wifi monitor on, so the available wifi will be listed on screen to choose. However, the only public one or member permit access can be used.
It is not difficult to search wifi network every time, especially in cafe, bookshop, and library.

You can also get handheld wifi detectors which will tell you the strength of local wifi signals.

I do belive that all McDonalds have free Wifi actually.

Here in Europe they have, but I do belive that some of "us" are from other places of the World, so, in Europe FREE WIFI in every McDonald's . Smile

But all of you already know that.. lol Razz

Secondcup makes you login through rogers, bell, facebook, or secondcup account, which you can create on the spot.
