Posted by ebu44 Duplicates in Speed and Red light camera files Hi All, I am pretty new to all this so be gentle please. I have a new Garmin Drive 60 and have been puzzling out the various capabilities over the last few days. I have experimented with various options for getting reliable coverage for speed cameras, red light cameras, and combined speed and red light cameras ... but keep running into problems with duplicates. Example - I used the global Australia wide complete set of all cameras (CAMERA-AU) and within that file I get up to 4 duplicate entries per intersection that I have checked (maybe more at some intersections). When you drive near the Melbourne CBD - it is pretty much constantly saying "Speed Camera Alert" as there are cameras everywhere and I am getting 4 alerts for each one. Eg (Not from the CBD - but illustrates the point). 145.06224 -37.80077 Camera alert @ 60 This is where the actual camera is mounted 145.062536 -37.800818 Camera alert This is the centre of the intersection 145.0626103 -37.8007703 Camera alert @ 60 This is just past the intersection 145.0626592 -37.8007673 Safety Alert AU - 1236 This is just past the intersection There is only 1 camera at this intersection pointing in 1 direction - but I get 4 alerts which are spread slightly apart. I saw a suggestion that instead of using the complete set I should try just loading up the 3 individual sub files - Redlight_Camera, Speed_Camera and Speed_Red_Camera. I did this and it improved things - but I still get at least two duplicates (the first from the Speed_Camera file and the second from the Speed_Red_Camera file): 145.0626043 -37.8008123 SPEED CAMERA WARNING - BURKE RD AND HARP RD KEW EAST VIC @60 145.062552 -37.800815 REDLIGHT SPEED CAMERA KEW EAST - HARP RD & BURKE RD; KEW EAST (BALWYN) VIC Is there any way to cull duplicates from these files without individually looking up GPS coordinates of every camera and manually deleting all the duplicates (which would take ages to do once - and would have to be redone every time a new file is downloaded)? Don't get me wrong - if I need to hear two warnings instead of one (which is where I seem to have gotten too at the moment) - I'm ok with that (much better than the 4 warnings I was getting at first ... and the NO WARNING that my default Garmin was giving me out of the box) - but I just wanted to see if maybe I was doing something wrong and perhaps there is a better way to get a duplicate free speed / red light camera file loaded onto my Garmin. Great website by the way - brings my dumber than expected Garmin up to a much smarter level! Cheers, Scott |
Posted by pjrich Duplicates in UK Speed and Red light camera file This is a coincidence! Whilst not in Australia but in the UK, I have experienced similar with cameras locally. In my case not with the red light cameras, but with GATSO speed cameras. This points to the fact that many cameras are duplicated in location files. This I find frustrating especially when I go past a local GATSO camera that gives me 4 icons. |
Posted by Mark Re: Duplicates Hi You can find the duplicate and press the DELETE/REMOVE button: https://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/local/ Go to POI Downloads / Options and select the "Do not show removed POIs" option. Regards |

Posted by JamesK Please suggest a list of files to use for Australia Hi Mark, I've just returned to Australia, and am faced with having to deal with the overwhelming mess of all kinds of revenue generating cameras they have in this country. Japan, where I have lived for many years has very few cameras and these are updated as part of the monthly updates on the radar detectors you can buy/use in Japan. Anyway, I've just signed up to this site and have been reading through the various threads and all the posts in this thread. Unfortunately I am still not quite sure which files I should download for Australia to try to minimize duplicate warnings. Below is the list of files I think I need but could please correct me if I'm wrong and/or list a recommendation (for Australia) of the files I SHOULD use, along with "Show Removed POIs: select Exclude (REMOVED) POIs": Do Not use: All In One camera file. Files to Use: Speed Camera Red Light Camera Speed & Red Light Camera (dual function) Toll (QLD only) Mobile Speed Cameras Traffic Camera Variable Speed Cameras Accident Black Spots Would it be correct to assume that the various "Fixed Speed Cameras" should be covered by the above list of Speed and Traffic cameras? Thank you for providing this great service, like others have said this site is full of great content. |
Posted by JamesK More Australian Camera File Questions Mark, Another, related question is: How much overlap is there (by design or otherwise) between the following files? I mean how much would I miss out on if I only used the Speed & Red cams file and not also the individual Speed Cams and Red Light Cams files? - Speed and Red Light Cameras - Red Light Cameras - Speed Cameras - Traffic Cameras Also, is the Traffic Cameras file some kind of a combination file of any of the above? |
Posted by Mark Re: More Australian Camera File Questions Hi The 4 listed AU camera files are required. All other files are optional (generated). Regards |
