Different choice of routes

I have 2 Garmin GPS devices, a 2720 and a new nuivi 265t. If I choose to go back home when I'm driving, with the same specifications which is fastest road both of them don't give me the same way to go back, my nuivi will give me a longer road to take, I dont know why that is. :?:

different choices

recon that the different units use different software to do the calculations (as per windows 7, vista, etc etc.) and very likely a different map version.
Have noticed that there is a discrepancy in some of the roads that I use on diverent map versions.

I have just returned from a trip to Perth then on to Darwin from Sydney and used my Garmin 760 with latest Garmin map update before I went. It didn't matter from Bathurst down towards Adelaide whether I chose Fastest or Shortest route both choices wanted to put me down through Adelaide rather than across say through eg; Burra or close by to Port Augusta. Just a tad further through Adelaide. Did a car relocation to Perth then another to Darwin 8,500k's in 14 days with a lookie see here and there. Garmin was good otherwise

Maybe they are using different settings for routing, such as fastest route, shortest distance, less gas, etc, or you have it set to avoid something specific such as traffic or freeways.

Traffic avoidance is one of the things that can produce really wierd routes, specially as your 265T has the FM traffic feature, with that bulky blob in the middle. I've seen cases where my 265WT would give me a completely different route than 5min before, because of the traffic pattern change.

Check: Tools->Settings->Navigation for "Route Preference" and "Avoidances".

If you're going into a "foreign land" where you've never been and have no idea what to expect, double check what your Garmin tells you & also view the directions on POI Maps.

I've done this from time to time in my journeys across New England and CT...New York City is a nightmare any way you go. Your best bet is to subscribe to Garmin Live Traffic (only $24.95 a year) and that will pay itself the first time you avoid an accident or highway construction. My 2nd day with my Nuvi 265WT with live traffic it re-routed me onto a service road that runs parallel to I-93 north through Boston at rush hour. EASILY saved me over an hour of sitting in traffic. Got to NH in 40 minutes I-93 would have been 90 minutes to 2 hours.

mapping

Different mapping versions will do that because all it needs is a speed limit change somewhere on the route and it'll send you off in a different direction. As we all know in the UK, a lot of limits are being reduced to allow the numpties that can't drive to crash at slower speeds.
