Two different mapsets

Greetings!

I have a Garmin StreetPilot c510. I plan to buy a 2 GB SD card in order to expand its memory (from 512 MB currenty available).

The question I'd like to ask is this: can I install two different mapsets on the device and have them functioning together? Specifically, I'd like to install AdriaRoute for Slovenia and Croatia because they're more detailed and City Navigator Europe for the rest of Europe.

AdriaRoute is smaller, so I'd put it on the device, and CityNavigator on the SD card. Could the two of them work together, and how to install them (how to name them etc).

Thanks a lot!

Re: Two different mapsets

I have a c510 and a 2GB SANDISK Ultra 2 card in it and I have, hitherto, had all my maps loaded on the card. If I had wanted one on the very small (more about that later) internal memory of the c510 and some on the 2GB card, then you I could probably have done that by telling the MapInstall software to put some on the Garmin disk and the other on the Noname SD card. Then I would go to the little spanner icon, Map, Map info, and ticked the boxes of the maps I want the Garmin to use.

However , before you do anything, read on about the changes to the c510 and the latest maps from Garmin. It renders your question somewhat irrelevant.

I bought a lifetime update for the c510 eighteen months ago but was no longer seeing newer maps on the Web Update app. I am currently on 2010.20 and the latest is City Navigator Europe NT 2011.30.

So, I called support and they told me that the c510 is no longer eligible for online updates even though I paid for them (the internal memory is too small for even the smallest map set).

Apparently, due to the fact that the software checks the amount of space available on the device at the start, and the c510 comes up short, we will never get Garmin MapInstall to load *anything* onto the (too small) internal memory. I have negotiated this issue in the past by installing the smallest map first and then editing the maps in order to load bigger maps onto the 2GB SD card, but I am told by support that there is now no mapset small enough to fit on the c510's internal memory so even this workaround is not available. The MapInstall software won't let you get started in this way any more. As I dont have a mapset to test with (I can't see it to download it) I can't tell you if this is really the case or not; I have to take their word for it.

Apparently, in order to avoid confusion, the web updater will not offer any of the newer maps to a c510 owner in order to avoid them downloading maps they cannot install. I have not seen a clear explanation of all this so I am not sure they are being as up front about the fact that c510 users now need to buy SD cards and not downloads, as they could be. From a user's perspective, their software tells you that you are up to date; event though from an absolute perspective you are not.

So, without boring you with the details, from now on you will need to buy the maps you want for the c510 on an SD card . Don't spend money on a blank one as you will no longer be able to download and install the latest maps from the web and install them on the c510 with an SD card installed.

To their credit they gave me a refund of the £99 I spent on the lifetime update (which I can no longer use) and I spent that on the SD card of City Navigator Europe NT 2011.30. They didn't offer me a lifetime update on SD cards, though.

2 mapsets

Rupert, thank you for the information re lifetime updates being unable to be installed on some GPS units. Hope Garmin notify and REFUND monies paid for the updates.
I wonder as to how many models this will/iss affecting ?

Two Different Mapsets

I have two maps on my new Nuvi 855. CN North America is installed on the main unit and CN Australia and New Zealand is installed on the micro SD card. The unit recognises both maps on "Map Info" on the Nuvi 855, however the "My Maps" page of Garmin support only recognises the North American map. I am currently waiting for Garmin to reply as to why the Australian and New Zealand map is not recognised as I am entitled to a free map update and since I live in Australia I am not interested in an update of the North America map.

Memory size?

Regarding the size of memory issue. I/we have the same problem with the European Zumo 550. Its internal memory is 2Gb and now, when the numaps update comes through, it asks what area we want to install. i.e Western Europe or Eastern Europe or Central Europe etc.
So, what I do is update the computer only with Numaps and then transfer the custom mapset of the counties I want via Mapsource. It gets installed as gmapsupp.img but it's then easy to rename it to gmapprom.img

Back up the North American map to computer or sd card and rename Aus Nz Map to gmapprom.img and place in the nuvi where the North American map is. You will have to have hidden files and folders showing on computer to find them then Garmin will see aus nz map and update it. Or use aus nz 2012.10 which came out 2 days ago and is all over the net.
