Effective Radar Detection Distance

Downloading Road Safety cameras there is an option for setting the aural and visual warning distance.
I have set 300 metres for Red Light Cameras.
I have set School Zones at 100 metres warning.
Is this the best setting?
Obviously Police radars are becoming more capable and as the Red Light camera doubles as a speed camera, the ideal alert distance depends on the capability of the police radar.

What do experienced members recommend?

Camera Alert Distances

The distance you set on your options depends on the speed zone you are in.

In a 110kph speed zone 300 metres is probably the minimum I would use as you will approach the zone at a very fast speed. In a 40kph zone you would probably need about 150 metres. This is because 50 to 100 metres is very close on approach and the human eye can see this distance easily. If you can see the distance usually you are very close to your objective and reaction time will be minimised.

Remember the distance of the zone is usally measured to the centre of the road not the kerb on the street. For instance if a speed zone was crossing an intersection it would be measured from the centre of the intersection, not the kerb on the side of the street.

Re: Camera Alert Distances

For Europe:
in town 250 ~ 500 m
open road: laser III type radar can get your speed 1500m, on highway 2000m.

This is my settings for igo primo:
warn_distances=130:1500,120:1300,110:1200,90:1000,80:800,70:800,60:500,50:500,40:300,30:300

If you set the distance too far away from the warning point, Garmin will drive you mad with beeps until you actually pass the speed zone starting point.
