| Posted by y.r Hello....i just joined....i'm 63 years old and new to GPS I just purchased a Garmin nuvi 255W i'm brand new at this GPS thing i would like to have a step by step on how to install the speed camera thing but i want it to talk to me not the beep please.....i just bought a new Montana van with enough bells and dingers going off all the time....please that is why i want it to talk to me......thank you for your time |
| Posted by bernienchris Step by step First you'll need to download POILoader. It's a free download. http://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/33.html Once you have downloaded it, run the program to install it on your PC. Try to take note where it was installed to, you'll see why later. Next create a folder on your computer, a label like "Custom POIs" will be fine, doesn't really matter where you put it, somewhere easy to remember. Then download the POI's you want to use. Pick the .GPX file and save into the folder we just created. You will also need the matching .BMP file and the .WAV (must have the same name as the GPX file e.g if you got 'speed-camera.gpx, you will need speed-camera.bmp etc) These files all go into the same folder with your GPX file. Your Nuvi cant use MP3 files so you need to use the .WAV, however for this to work you will also need to download Sox.exe available here http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/get.php?download=O29/software/sox.exe Once unzipped and saved to your PC (should just be one file, drag it or copy it to your folder where the POI Loader is installed, remember i said to take note of this above. Now connect your Nuvi to your PC, and start POI Loader. When it finds your device, click next, hit the top button 'install new custom POI's onto your device' and click next, Click the browse button and find the folder you made earlier with your new POI's in it. Make sure you have the correct units of measure and click on express, then click next. That's pretty much it, all done, now take it for a trip and test it if possible. If in future you want to add more POI's, just repeat - putting them all in the same folder together, you wont need to download sox again though. Hope this is of assistance. Cheers, |
| Posted by william.beck MP3 File I have used the mp3 file in a Garmin Nuvie 760 that is a csv file, bmp file and a mp3 file (all with the same name an appropriate extension) and they worked a treat) Unfornatuly my 760 has now packed it in and I am about to try it with the new one |
| Posted by alan3333333 GPS Hi Just a point to remember whern using your GPS. They aren't foolproof so don't trust it 100%. Maps are not always up to date because of roadworks and the like. I always keep a close eye on road signs too. All GPS units are the same in this regard. Having said that they are an invaluable aid to getting around in unfamiliar places.
