Garmin POI data file CSV or GPX

I'm a newbie on all this custom POI stuff and would like to ask those in the know what, if any, advantage of using a CSV POI file over a GPX POI file for a Garmin nuvi 255W.

As far as editing, the CSV file loads up nicely in my Excel spreadsheet and I can edit the data if needed. I think I looked at the GPX file and it appeared to be like an XML parsed file.

Can anyone enlighten me on the difference?

Cheers...Kent

CSV / GPX

I believe that the major difference is file size - the CSV file can contain less info in a smaller file.

However, I like the csv option as it can be more easily edited.

If you have Mapsource software on your computer. You can import the GPX files and view them on the map.

Re: poi

You are supposed to upload only one (CSV or GPX). If you upload both then others report getting two POI files on their device.

The Garmin POI loader changes the CSV into a GPX. However the GPX files on this site contain extra information, such as distance away from the POI to trigger the proximity alert (i.e. select 100 m, 200 m, 100 ft, 200 ft... to trigger your warning for the POI).

The CSV format it nice to open easily in excel, though.
