Make your Garmin GPS work efficiently

After purchasing a Garmin GPS, we often upgrade the software and update map to latest version. With the frequently doing this, some temporary files will be accumulated more and more for long time just like our computers. Temporary files will affect our GPS reading data.

Now I would like to share my experience to let the Garmin GPS work efficiently.

The maintenance is suitable for any model, such as, NUVI 2 series/2x5 series; 3 series; 6 series; 760/765 and so on.

Pleas following the steps as showing:
1. Connect Garmin GPS to your computer with usb cable;
2. Choose the Garmin device (disc), then select 'Garmin'folder;
3. Duplicate the 'GPX' folder, and keep it safe in the computer (GPX folder includes some personal data, such as 'my favorite' and routing). In my case, I just make a copy of all Garmin folder;
4. Turn off the Garmin GPS after copying all of data;
5. Press and hold the bottom right corner of GPS screen, meanwhile turn on the GPS unit, then release finger when the opening logo displays; (P.S, For nuvi 3 series, you should hold the top right corner of the screen);
6. The message will ask you 'Do you really want to erase all user data?', choose 'yes';
7. Reboot Garmin GPS, copy the duplication of 'GPX' folder back to "Garmin' folder on the device.

Everything done~ remember, make copies of all of your data and map on the device before upgrading and updating software and map or doing any maintenance.

How often should this been done?

I am not a computer guy, so I don't know how this works, but would this not just put the file back in as it was before? Wouldn't you need to defrag the file or something?

Answer:

1. Depend on how often do you upgrade and update your device. 2 or 3 months one time will be ok. After doing this, I found my 660 unit work fast to receive satellite signals.

2. It is very simple maintenance, just need you to copy the backup file back to your unit as before, as I said early, the files include all of your favourite poi and personal data.

3. No, You only need to backup the POI file from your unit just for this maintenance. But it is good to backup all of files on your GPS unit. I did by myself and I am not expert as well. It is very simple.
