Loss of Data Nuvi 285 WT

I haven't used my GPS in a couple/three weeks. I went out and turned it on, today, and it started out prompting me "What Country". When I got to favorites, it said "No Data".

Can I recover the data? Does anyone know what happened or has had it happened to you? I am furious as I've spent a lot of time putting in addresses for a vacation.

I had downloaded State Parks for my state and they are still there, but no other addresses. Any help/advice would be very much appreciated. I don't keep it plugged in when not in use. I don't remember reading in the instructions that that was necessary.

Data restored, but...

I pretty much spent a couple of hours re-entering data, and it's no where near everything I had entered. Then, it took another couple of hours to back up the Garmin folder.

I suppose if I'm on my way out the door to go on vacation and find all my data gone, again, I can assume that it will take another couple of hours to copy the data back from my computer to the GPS. I'm not happy.

Surely there is a way to avoid losing data in the first place. I can't think of anything I did that would have caused it. Even my home address was gone. All of my settings were changed. Do I have to keep it charged, maybe.? I hate to put the drain on my battery--I don't need it often, but I'd like it to be there when I do need it.

Again, any advice would be appreciated.

Lost data

Did you have to charge it before using as I am wondering if the battery had run flat and caused it to loose data stored in volatile memory. Other than that have you had it connected to your computer and perhaps accidentally deleted a file

Loss of Data

Baz,

Thanks for your response. It turned on so the battery wasn't dead and I hadn't had it connected to my computer. Do you know if I'm supposed to keep it connected and charging in my vehicle? I keep it hidden away, when not in use, for security reasons. Thanks for posting.

Any time you update your POI file, it re-writes the file in the GPS, called POI.gpi, and it holds ALL POI's in that file, then you read it in the order you have it on your computer. Sounds like you may not be re-entering ALL the data PLUS your new POI's.

Johna, thanks for posting. I confused my question by stating that I had added the state parks. That was done when I first got the unit. I hadn't done anything at all to change it. The other info I added I added directly via the keyboard on the GPS.

Everything was gone, even my "home" and all the data from my favorites except for the state parks.

I've had it plugged since yesterday and will check it, today. Hopefully, it was just a one time glitch. I hate to keep it plugged in because I'm afraid of theft, but that may be my only alternative. Again, thanks for your information.
