Posted by melanie.friedl WiFi to POI conversion This is exactly what I needed for my free wifi access points in Austria poi list (my first): http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/poi_manager.php Thanks |
Posted by Andy Re: WiFi to POI conversion Melanie, I agree. However, WiFi is obsolete technology. Why don't you buy some decent 3G phone (with or without GPS) and you'll be able to surf the net wherever and whenever you want? Andy |
Posted by melanie.friedl Custom location to Poi conversion Yeah, I completely agree, obsolete and I naturally have a 3g data sim with me at all times (phone and USB dongle). But Austria has an amazing amount of open wifi access points and even a few companies who specialize in open and free wifi access points at local cafes and bars. So I'm collecting them all to create a poi list, hopefully it helps someone out when traveling in Austria one day. |

Posted by awskong Free WIFI Free WIFI over expensive broadband data plan definitely!!! Canada's data plans are outrageously overpriced! |
Posted by adam_d_richardson WIFI not dead WIFI is definitely not obsolete. 3G is good but coverage is still patchy especially with some carriers and some mountainous regions suffer really poor coverage. 4G will be much faster but will take some time to roll out. The other main problem with mobile data is the cost. Even in your local country you will be lucky if you can get good rates on 3G data (most unlimited plans are actually capped at either 500Mb or 1Gb thanks to the get out clause of a fair use policy). Roaming charges for mobile data when outside of your home country are insane and you will almost always pay by the Mb. Free Wifi access when you are travelling abroad is a life saver. |
Posted by evg84 Post subject: WIFI not dead In Italy the 3g is not very good. Sometimes it stops. Instead, for the wifi there is still very little coverage Free |
