Navman S50 Crashes and POI icons not shown

I have a 5 mth old Navman S50, which over the past few months crashes after approx 1 hour of operation. Crash looks like a hard reset, which is a pain in the neck when navigating in the suburbs.

Installed Australian Service Pack 1 with no change, except crash time reduced, possibly only doing a soft reset.

Navman support advised SFW need reinstallation, so device was sent to Sydney, and returned within 1 week (not bad). On return I found that Navman only reinstalled original SmartST, so reinstalled Service Pack 1.
No change, device still crashes, but has reverted to hard reset type crash.

Upgraded maps to 2008, and upgrade appears to have updated the SmartST sfw as well. Still no joy, the S50 crashed (hard reset) again.

Called NavMan support, and this time finished up speaking to a techo in Manilla. His only suggestion was to reset to factory defaults. No change.

Out of interest he knew nothing about the Australian Service Pack 1, including what it was meant to fix.

Any ideas, apart from driving truck over the S50.

Also have issue with POI icons from this site not displaying during travel. The CSV files are installed ok, as they will display messages when flagged to do so. In some cases, an installed ICON may appear for a second at the top of the screen, but disapppears as you near the site. The S50 supplied Safety Camera ICONs display ok while travelling.

I have tried turning off the NAVMAN supplied POIs, but this has made no oifference.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

POIs Not Displaying - Update

Discussed POI display issues with NAVMAN Tech Support, and it appears that problem may be caused by display rendering issues if the screen has a lot to display.

This actually ties up with my further testing, where I have found that Custom POIs do not show up in city areas, but DO show up in country areas where there is less for the S50 to display.

I have now turned off most of the NAVMAN issued POIs and will test with a subset of GPS Data Team POIs over the next week.

Another possible cause my be the S50 CACHE as I have been told all POIs within a 5Km radius of the current location are written to CACHE to enable quicker rendering. My testing with turning off most of the POIs not required, mayy assist this if it is the cause.

Hard Reset

To add a thought on this, I have an S90 and exactly the same is occuring, i.e hard reset and also the imported POI not beeing shown.

My point is that it is also occuring in what navman regard as their top of the line device... I am also using SP1

I had an ICN device previously that did not have these issues.

Spontaneous Reset

I have an S45 purchased as a 2008 Christmas gift. It also does the spontaneous reset. A little annoying, especially when I miss a turn as a result. It also means that I have had to disable the PIN function because a reset meant I had to pull over to type in the PIN.

I fail to see how Navman's service policy of "return for investigation" overrides the consumer's right to replace, refund, or repair at the place of purchase with proof of purchase.

Anyways, I will bear with the problem and replace with a different brand I think. Disappointed.

Valium Ran Out

Well eventually the Valium ran out and after 9 months of pain, I went back to the same retail chain where I purchased the original S50.

They were were good to deal with, and offered to send the S50 back to NAVMAN for replacement with ther recommendation attached.

After 2 weeks of inaction by NAVMAN, the retailer offered a credit for the original amount and after discussions, I walked away with a TomTom XL, which turned out later to be what the salesman also owned.

To date (after 2 months) the device is still young, but only appears to have 1 hang up. It will not connect to the satelite if there are more than about 10 favourites stored. To fix you just do a soft reset, which does not lose any data, and appears to bypass problem.

Later follow up revealed that NAVMAN did in fact replace the device with the retailer, but the replacement was in such poor condition, the retailer sent it back.

Navman S50 crashes

Hi , i have a S45 with similar problems. I think it is related to available memory being exceed by trying to load to many POI's. I eventually purchased a memory card and did a complete reinstall. I moved all maps out of system memory and placed them on the card.

It seem to work a lot better now but problem still exists with poor battery life..
