      Trying to open the case of my, faulty, F20. Have undone the (tiny) screws. Is it just a case of brute force and ignorance or is a knack involved.

You can't make it any worse if you break it. the f20/f40 were a poor unit and Navman won't even take them as a trade-in on later model.
