      G'day all.
Been looking at external antenna's for my Nuvi 760. Before I purchase one, I was wondering if they are capable of giving my GPS increased accuracy over the standard internal antenna?

I've done a search on here and nothing related has come up?

Cheers

A external antenna's doesn't increase accuracy. It allow to obtain more straing of satelitte signal.

Hmmm.

I always thought that the more satilites seen the more accurate the readings?
So if an external antenna helps with aquiring more satilites then accuracy happens by default?

Sit under my carport without external antenna, I get 7 satilites and accuracy is 10 -12 mtrs. With the external antenna, 4-5 mtrs!

I use an external antenna on my Garmin 3 Plus and it does give better reception in heavy tree cover and around other obsticles. An external antenna on a Nuvi should give you a better view of the sky than a unit mounted on the dash of a vehicle. Go with the external. You won't be sorry.

You're 100% right and I agree with you Smile - the more powerful signal, the more accuracy you'll get on your GPS device.

Cars, which have factory GPS, usually have external antenna it worth to have on our cars IMHO.

Definitely, the better antenna the more birds.

Precision GPS devices used with very accurate time signal applications try to get 12 GPS satellites. I cannot remember the time accuracy but it was in the 100 nanosecond range.

Of course car navigation GPS does not need that accuracy, but the better the antenna the more birds the more accurate the result; still holds.

Agreed but I never had a need for external antenna. The car unit snaps to roads anyway.

External aerial definately gives better reception of satelites. Haven't had to use it yet on the 765 yet though.

I bought an external antenna and it was completely worthless. It made no difference whatsoever.
