Hi, just joined and downloaded some Garmin Point of interest from your most impressive collection - thanks!
I know speed camera POIs have been around for a while and I can see some real benefits in them, as not only do these allow you to avoid paying speeding tickets, but they also warn of dangerous spots (assuming speed cameras have not just been placed as cash cows ).
However, just a word of warning - some national legislations take a very dim view of speed camera POIs stored on a satnav device. Germany, for example, allows police to impound devices on which (German?) speed camera POIs are stored, and I think Switzerland acts similarly. The justification is obstruction of justice. Other nations take a more liberal view.
It would be nice if we could set up a list of states and their attitudes to speed camera POIs - anyone with relevant info on other nations? I assume this is at state level in the US - so information divided by state would be handy. Consider this post as my contribution to the list. |

One solution, is to keep a backup sd card hidden away in your car, and if you should get pulled over just hit the poi delete button. then reload your poi's once the cost is clear.

Try this tip:
For Navman units - load radar POI's with audio alert only (use "do not display the icon" option)
For Garmin and Tomtom units - create custom icons for all radar files. Audio alerts will be preserved, but without visible POI icons.
In order to create a transparent custom icon, Garmin uses the following RGB color: 255,0,255 (Magenta). TomTom uses RGB 255,0,0 (Red).
Load all Switzerland and Germany CSV, GPX or OV2 files with your "blank" icons.
Cheers

| So far, in Australia there has not been a murmur towards banning the use of GPS warnings. Hopefully the polli's realize how much they contribute TO road safety. I.E. Schools, black spots etc.

Hi Johmazz2006!
Do you know if this also applies to QLD? Also, how does the software "know" about Mobile Speedcameras?
So far I am still in learning mode. Maybe ther may be a chance to open a forum dedicated to IGO8 at some stage? I know there is a lot of info for IGO users but at the moment it seems to be only accesible through the search function....(maybe I am wrong, an I freely admit to my "NEWBIE" status!)
Kind regards
Alfred

Anyone know whether or not Speed camera POIs are allowed in Canada or not? Most of the cameras near where I live and work are red light cameras. While I hate speed cameras, I approve of those because I've had some fairly close calls with people running a red light.
aaquintus: There are mobile speed camera detectors that detect whatever those hairdryers put out. I haven't seem them in Canada yet and I suspect they're only useful if the cop is infront of you but I love the idea of them.

Ah, Yes I thought so! In other words the GPS unit is still not very reliable in detecting Mobile cameras at all BUT is OK with fixed cameras as long as you keep on updating the POI database.
What info is in the Mobile Camera Database (must be historic data?)
Thanks and kind Regards
Alfred

As far as I know, it's usually a list of places where they like to hide. So you should be careful when you drive past them.

The "mobile speed camera" locations are where people have seen police movement in mobile vehicles with the detectors on side of police cars. All users can add or post any new areas that they know of or have seen the use of mobile radars to add to the data base.

Yes, that makes sense to me now. I was not completly clear if there may be a way the GPS can update data through downloads....but now I can see that is just a bit of wishful thinking!
Thanks for the clarification!

I don't agree with this at all. I think some people would use them for this, but an awful lot of people use them so they can speed as much as they want. This is a very dangerous attitude, and not enough is done to stop people like this. Most people on the road are good, and sure, if you are in the middle of the bush with nothing around go for it, but too many people drive like maniacs in the city, using this data to evade detection.

| Victoria (Australia) are about to amend their rules so that you can use GPS warning devices in your cars, as long as they are attached to the windscreen. They were going to ban the use of all navigation devices on mobile phones, such as on Nokia and iPhones, but due to the public outcry they have changed their mind.

I would think the Police would thank GPS users who have Speed Camera POI's downloaded. Think of it this way...If the GPS tells us where there might be a Suspected SC Site- then we would abide and slow down. We are in fact, aware of their surroundings and act accordingly.
I'm not a stuck up driver, but a prudent driver. I would love to know how my driving would best benefit me and my passengers.
