Found this useful link in an other forum, it explains a very easy way to set a Verizon phone to be able to use it with a TomTom to update away from home, get weather, and use the buddy feature.

As a side bonus, you will also be able to get 1m internet from your laptop while away from home.
The info about pricing in the other forum is old, now you need a data plan to not be charged an arm-and-a-leg, it won't work as minutes as they state.
You can get a plan for 10-15/month from VZW
